About John West
I am a self taught artist and have worked in oil, acrylic, India ink, and watercolor in a wide range of styles and subject matter including landscapes, seascapes, still life, and portraits. I think that watercolor is the most challenging and interesting.
While there is an endless amount of knowledge and documentation about what makes some art truly exceptional, what makes a painting interesting for me is surprisingly simple; how the artist captures the illusive and subtle effects of light. I am continuing to learn the wonderful tricks light can play splashing around on different subjects and I am enjoying the exploratory process more with each attempt.
Each painting is an experiment, an attempt to discover something new, to capture the emotion and mood of the subject, not just a likeness. Therefore, each painting generally has a hook, a goal, an interesting element of composition, color, or brushwork that hopefully will make the viewer stop and look for a while. I guess that's every artist's goal. I hope you like what you see!
