John West

I am a self taught artist and have worked in oil, acrylic, India ink, charcoal, and watercolor in a wide range of styles and subject matter including landscapes, seascapes, still life, and portraits. I think that watercolor is the most challenging and interesting. While there is an endless amount of knowledge and documentation about what makes some art truly exceptional, what makes a painting interesting for me is usually surprisingly simple; how the artist captures the illusive and subtle effects of light. I am continuing to learn the wonderful tricks light can play splashing around on different subjects and I am enjoying the exploratory process more with each attempt.
